Well, that didn’t take very long at all. Fresh off the debut of the 8th generation 3-series (G50), BMW has unveiled the iX3’s curvier brother, the iX4. Yes, the X4 is back for a third generation…kind of.

The first two generations of X4, F26 and G02, only received ICE powertrains. The new NA7 is the third car to be part of BMW’s Neue Klasse and will be electric only. That’s right, no ICE model is planned. So, if you want a sloped back coupe-like SUV with a bit of noise, you’ll have to settle for the U10 X2.

To start, the exterior of the iX4 brings nothing surprising to the table. It follows the typical BMW format of even numbered vehicles being the more athletic swoopier version of their odd numbered counterparts. Up front, we are greeted with the familiar illuminated narrow kidneys and snake-eye-like headlights. The side features muscular hips, a bit wider than the outgoing G02 model. Running it to the back, present are the same thin taillights and hatch-style trunk.
All in all, it is essentially the same outside as the iX3 with the exception of the rear. Interesting tidbit for the iX4 only, M-sport is now standard. There will be no non-M bumper available for the iX4.

If you thought the inside would be any different than you’re out of luck. The interior of iX4 is copy and pasted from the iX3. This means the large 18-inch center-mounted screen encompasses the dash with the long thin panoramic screen filling in behind it.
Like the exterior, the interior only differs due to the sloped roofline, causing decreased headroom for rear passengers and slightly less cargo space in the trunk. Another thing worth mentioning is that the panoramic roof is now standard. This is an additional option on the iX3, pretty neat that it comes built into the price for the iX4.

The iX4 will be released for the US market in March of 2027 in two different flavors. The base model, 50 xDrive, occupies the entry level of the iX4 suite. It’s capable of 428 miles of range, which is extremely competitive when it comes to alleviating range anxiety. It’s also good for 463 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, a big jump when compared to the G02 xDrive30i’s 248hp and 258 lb-ft.
For those looking for a bit more excitement, the iX4’s upper trim brings a host of M goodies. The M60 xDrive receives yellow day time running lights, adaptive M suspension, as well as a rear locking differential. The top dog makes 603 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. These numbers not only exceed the G02 M40i, but the full on F98 M Competition as well. Another upgrade exclusive to the M60 xDrive is a larger battery, good for 483 miles of range.

When rumors began surfacing years ago about a new generation of BMW with the iX3 leading the pack, many wondered if an iX4 would follow. For a while there was nothing but radio silence, with many expecting the swoopy coupe to ride off into the sunset at the conclusion of the G02. An all electric version of an already niche, less-practical car, surely BMW would never allocate resources towards that? But, surprisingly, here we are. Honestly, I’m glad! I love quirky and I love weird and this scratches that itch. It’s a handsome car and I’m excited to see this new release on roads in a few short months!
